When did you learn about the start date, have the new job asked you to change what was already agreed? If so, you could ask about starting at the original day, but taking the first two weeks as holiday. If you can do with basically no holiday for the rest of the year.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

I don't think you're entitled to benefits for some time if you've chosen to leave your job.

Personally, I always like to have a gap of a week or two between ending one job and starting another. It's just nice to spend some time - go on holiday, decorate the house, watch that boxset you have been meaning to - without any pressure from work at all.

It was discussed at the first interview that I was available to start then. He told agency rep to advise me but I never got that message so handed in my notice as you would.
Also, after revising my contract I've noticed they've made it a 42.5 hrs week contract and not the 40 that I'm certain it was
The ad has been removed so I can't check.
Should I query this or let it slide? It means less lunch time.

Have you tried google cache to find the removed job advert?

I would query it. You are losing thirty minutes lunch a day! I would not be happy with that

Is this a good move for you, there are signs creeping in that it may not be.
