Housing executive and pets

Hi I'm looking for any info at all regarding the housing executive and whether you can keep pets or how that works, the house I've been living in was owned by a relative who has passed away and the house is going up for sale at some point possibly at the end of this year, I have 2 dogs which I need to take with me whenever I do end up moving and I'm wondering how that works with the housing executive? I've read that you're only allowed one pet but other people have told me they've seen people in housing executive houses with lots of cats / dogs so how does that actually work are you sometimes allowed pets in depending on the house? I've been trying to get through to citizens advice but haven't been able to speak to anyone get

It's usually best to go to the source for things like this rather than relying on hearsay...0 -
It depends whether you are in a house or a flat but generally Ito have more than one you need the District Managers permission.
I guess many don’t ask though.

you would wonder when you know people In NIHE houses that keep Lofts Of Pigeons and Breed Dogs. Is that not Classed as Pets Hopefully we have Someone on The NI board who works for NIHE or did who Knows?~We are all going to hell and guess who Is driving the bus~*Norn Iron club Member 294* (Hi, we’ve had to remove part of your signature. You may be allowed pets in certain properties depending on what the landlord accepts.
Why It relates only to Northern Ireland ?~We are all going to hell and guess who Is driving the bus~*Norn Iron club Member 294* (Hi, we’ve had to remove part of your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE Forum Team)0 -

Well, there are rules and there are rule breakers. I know loads of people who break the pet rule and I dont think the HE are really bothered. Unless of course the pets cause a nuisance they could clamp down but never heard of it happening. Could also depend on what type of neighbours you would have, some may have an issue whilst others may notI started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p0

Ok thanks, so it is possible I just need to ask the district manager for permission first if I was offered a flat or maisonette
I'd like to know which circumstances would effect the district managers decision like is it based on whether the neighbours of the house also have pets and wouldn't be bothered by someone else moving in with some, or if they also consider how much you really needed pets for example if they helped you deal with anxiety or if they don't count that sort of thing?0 -
OP, can I ask are you on the waiting list already, if not you better apply. You have no guarantee if the NIHE will be able to house youg there are very long waiting lists, and people can if single or even with children be moved into hostels where you will not be allowed pets of any sort.
Where I live NIHE loads of people have dogs 2 or 3 also cats one woman has 3 cats in a one bedroom flat cat the NIHE about other things and no one has said anything to her. I have never actually heard of anyone being threatened with eviction because they own pets.0 -
I went on the housing list 5 years ago just to see what I'd be offered but I haven't been offered anything due to the area I chose being highly sought after its the same area where I live in now, I've renewed my request every time they send it out and they sent one out last week so I'm going to have to call and update them on my change of circumstances that the house is due to be sold and at that point I would be homeless, not sure if I should also say that I had dogs too incase that might give me less points or how that works I'm trying to get through to the CAB housing executive help number but there's a long queue
Have the people that keep cats and dogs in their houses asked permission though or did they just bring them in and no one has said anything, the gist I got from the links posted was that if you brought pets in unauthorised and someone reported it they could be taken away0 -

No, never. It is in the rules but I have never actually heard of neighbours ever ask. The only problems will be if dogs bite or howling then someone would complain to the NIHE about the pet. A few pensioners live in upstairs flats or even a small block have dogs and just got them. Private landlords you really do need to get permission though as I have read of people told to get rid of a pet or leave.
It is like gardens. In the rules you are suppose to keep your garden tidy yet many houses have knee high grass and NIHE has as far as I know ever issued a warning.0
