You can buy a house in Durham for the price of a cheap kitchen

I kid you not:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/06/20/uk-housing-market-loses-1bn-value/
Barnet has had the highest median house price for 10 of the last 22 years. The area had a median house price of £7,775,000 compared to that of County Durham and Sunderland of just £24,000.

As a BTL landlord, I cackle sneeringly at the people of County Durham and Sunderland, as - with Mark Carney and local estate agents' help - I deliberately blight their lives with my pure, evil wickedness.

£24k is a cheap kitchen? Mine only cost me about £11k.

But yeah, you've got a point somewhere?

Since when has £24k been a cheap kitchen?

Unless you're having a whole new back extension built.

As someone from the area thats just fake news.

County Durham is massively varied. Durham City is quite pricey, the area pit villages are cheap. Average price you're looking at about £125k. Sunderland similar prices, cheaper than central Durham City, but more expensive than outer villages.

£24k is just nonesense as an average for the whole area. The cheapest Durham village somewhere like Easington colliery (where they filmed Billy Elliott) could be round that figure as the place really is a dump. Although neighbouring Easington village is alright and costs a lot more

It's median not mean. Presumably there are lots of houses in dumps like Easington Colliery and relatively few in Durham City.

Back when I was doing GCSE maths, I thought median was a stupid measure for people who couldn't be bothered to do the sums to work out the mean, and my opinion hasn't changed much.

Figures just dont work, there is 5 properties for sale in sunderland under £24000, and 1580 for over £24000, so mean or medium, you would not get an average of £24000.
