We invested in somes friends company and received bi monthly bonuses we have just found out by ringing the offices they rented that they left there place of buisness 3-4 weeks ago and have gone bankrupt we have nothing legal in writing just a typed letter and lots of e-mails with excuses why our payments have been delayed if there anything we can do

Do you have proof they have gone bankrupt? Have they just told people that to get some breathing room with the creditors?
If they (or the company) have they should appear on the register here:

Are you talking about the company being wound up or personal bankruptcy here?
Finally, what proof of your investment does this "typed letter" state?
