Solar Power Shed

Options
Hi All

I have been considering using solar to get power in my shed rather than running a mains cable out there. I dont really use power tools so it only needs to cover lighting and charging. I keep going round in circles at the moment. One option being a 12 or 24V battery system with an inverter. The other option is can I just run a 12V lighting system straight off the battery?
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has gone down this route.

    If you're just thinking about lighting, there are some very efficient 12V lighting systems available for caravans. I've recently replaced all the fluorescent and standard filament bulbs in the caravan with LEDs. Many many times brighter. You can also use a standard car 12V adaptor to charge any USB devices you have.

    If you need 230V AC then you'll need an inverter. Remember inverters take some power when turned on even though they are not providing power to devices connected to the output.

    Five watt solar panel, any 12volt car battery, and a strip of led
    lights on a ribbon, with a switch to the positive battery terminal.
    The strip of led's should only cost about five pounds;
    tons of light output !

    Thanks for the replies. I think I may start out with the lighting only option and see how it progresses.
