old mortgage proof

Hi,
anyone any ideas as to how to find proof of paid off old mortgage, approx 20yrs ago? I have the account no, and the original building society, which was taken over, and that building soc was taken over. The leasehold was not registered, and originally had a charge on it. I inherited the house with freehold absolute, which was registered. Can't find the old lease, so the quickest way would be to prove the mortgage was paid off. thanks.

Land registry should have a record of this. As the charge would have been removed.
