Is it not plausible that the other person was better, not that there was necessarily anything wrong with you?

I’ve frequently passed on the best candidate because I’ve thought they won’t be a good fit. I think that what “you were great, but no thanks” often boils down to.

It is plausible. But that’s not the way they fed it back to me. If they had given me good feedback and not mentioned that I’d be bored and that I was too good then I would be less frustrated

That's not the same as doing too well at interview, though, is it? It means they got the impression that you're going to want more than they're offering and you'll move on soon. Perhaps you didn't come across as really enthused by the idea of working there or in that job. Perhaps you came across as flighty.

It means "we (actually I) am not employing you in this position as by the time you have been here 6 months you will be taking my job".

A friend of mine had to leave qualifications off his CV in order to get jobs that were perceived as lower than his previous employment. All he wanted to do was reduce his stress levels by changing to a less demanding career.

  • I recently had an interview for an NHS post, I was told that my interview was excellent but they felt I would be bored in the role but to keep looking for other vacancies in the team. I saw an advert for a job a band higher and applied, I have now been there two months and really would have been bored in the other role. Keep looking and you will find a job which suits you.

When I was made redundant the company brought in a specialist team to help us with job search, CV etc. One of the things they said to us was to tailor the CV to the job and, if necessary, leave off some qualifications. That for exactly the reasons outlined above.

In another role they seemed concerned about the distance I would have to travel in each day. Once something sticks in an interviewers mind if can be hard to change.

And from the other side.....3 years ago we interviewed someone for a mid-level role but they had to commute a fair way down one of the country's busiest motorways. On a good day it's 45 mins. On a bad day, 1.5hrs.
We asked them every which way if that's an issue, during 3 interviews. What if they had bad traffic every day? This wasn't a role that could be more than 30 mins flexible on start and end times.

The applicant swore and promised upside down that the journey was no problem, they were used to driving, they "got the music on" and zoned out...it gave them "thinking and winding down time". All plausible so they got the job.

10 months later, just after full training was given, they left. The reason was that they were fed up with the commute.

I'll never believe any candidate again when they say similar about a long journey - they lie, to employers and themselves.

We've turned down excellent candidates at interviews because we thought their skills and capabilities were above what the job would offer and that indeed, they would get bored, and either be difficult in wanting to take on more responsibilities, which we wouldn't have been able to offer, move on to another role within months, or let their boredom affect their attitude to the job. It was clear they went for the job as a mean to get in the industry, but inevitably would have looked to move up, yet there were no position that we could have offered. I felt bad for the person, but there was another candidate with the right skills who also interviewed well, who was better suited for the job, so they got it.

It's all well to say that you'll take boredom for better pay, but the reality is that boredom does impact on productivity in the long run and having been in this position, it does get to you and the extra money doesn't forcibly make up for it.
