Remortgaging - why pay my mortgage twice in one month ?

I’ve recently remortgaged my property. My new lender is Nationwide and the completion date was 1st of June. Last week I received £359 back from Santander but I’m not sure why. Today I had a letter in the post from Nationwide to say that on 21st of this month a mortgage payment will come out. Then another mortgage payment will come out on or after the 1st of July. Why Am I paying twice this month? First Santander payment came out on 1st June. And why did I receive money back from Santander ?

Presumably S took the payment automatically at the beginning o the month and then refunded it. Nationwide want payment for a bit of June and will take payments on the 1st of the month thereafter.0
