Forgot that I didn't have a pass on 19-25 m-card

Hi

So I recently got onto a train from Huddersfield to Dewsbury. The gates at Huddersfield were open and so I didn't scan my card. When I got to Dewsbury, I tried scanning my card thinking that I had a pass on it. However, it had expired. I was stopped by the officer who then took my details and confiscated my card. He said I was going to receive a letter in the post in a couple of weeks. This is my first offence. I know it s my fault. I think the company is Transpennine Express and Northern Railway.

Anyone know what could happen? I am panicking now.

Thanks

Most train operators will send you an offer to settle out of court (not all but most) this would typically be the fare avoided plus £100 or so.
If you don't want to pay that or can't pay they can take you to court (some are quite litigious, some aren't) and the fines can be quite dear then.

It's a strict liability case however so there's probably no getting away with it.
i.e. you couldn't produce a valid ticket in a compulsory ticket area.

consumer action group or the https://www.railforums.co.uk both have very experienced experts in these matters on them so if you need further advice it would pay to seek their particular expertise.
