I refused to pay the extortionate charges and interest, I also entered into a debt management plan and paid them instead, but all that happened was my money went into a blackhole while the companies I was in debt to charged even more charges and interest. Great government backed scheme the DMP's were, more great advice I got off this board. So yes, LEECHES.

Sounds like you went to a firm that charged for DMP NOT one of the one recommended on here

Because I see people rack up hundreds of thousands of pounds of debt so I KNOW people are holding back on information of what to do when they are in my situation.....
Maybe if you were to clarify your situation a little further, we may be able to help you better.........DMP`s are not Government backed schemes, they are privately run by debt management companies, who do charge a fortune for doing nothing basically.

If you were advised to do a DMP then one run by the debt charities is free.

Well i was told ON THIS BOARD it was a government backed scheme. CCCS. I see they no longer exist, absolute cowboys.

CCCS are now stepchange, are you sure it was a debt management plan, and not some form of insolvency such as an IVA, they incur fees, a DMP through CCCS (as they were) would not of done so.

It was a DMP, what happened was that I paid them thousands, but all my debtors obviously never saw a penny of it and none of them froze the interest like was supposed to happen, I was still inundated with phone calls (which was supposed to stop) and when i'd explain Im on a DMP they would say I wasn't. So I stopped paying CCCS after a year or so of throwing money down the drain, then I started to get threatening phone calls from them.

Your story is a tad confusing, stepchange (CCCS) are a debt charity, they make payments to your creditors, on your behalf, you would of had paperwork from them, with a reference number on it, it would of been easy to obtain a statement to see how you were progressing at any time.

If a particular creditor was unaware of your DMP, surly the correct thing to do would be to contact CCCS and find out what had gone wrong, they are not obliged to stop interest and charges, but a bit of persistence by the debtor usually does the trick.

The way to handle any problems with your arrangement would of been to contact CCCS to find out what was happening, even progress to a complaint, walking away after paying a considerable sum of money, whose whereabouts remain uncertain, was defenatly the wrong thing to do, did you not even consider a complaint ?

How long ago was this ?

This is all very confusing. 10-15 years ago there was a widespread problem with sharks imitating the good guys in debt advice. I remember Citizens Debt Advice Bureau, Debtline ... and Credit Card Consolidation Service. I wonder if you got involved with one of those shark organisations?
