Delay Repay - question regarding Minimum Connection Times

Hello,
A couple weeks ago I missed my connection at Manchester Piccadilly. The first train was, according to the railway, 7 minutes late meaning that I had 4 minutes to make my connection, which I didn’t manage partially due to the fact that I don’t know my way around Manchester Piccadilly and partially due to the fact that I was held up exiting the first train by some people struggling with luggage.

I made a claim for delay repay, which was rejected because ‘there was no reason why I couldn’t have made the connection’.

Does anybody know how you find out what are the minimum connection times at large stations?

I want to appeal, but would like to understand if I have reasonable grounds. As an aside I think the first train was more like 9 or 10 minutes late not the 7 minutes the railway states but I have no way of proving that.

Thanks for your help.
