Now creating spreadsheets for my finances, and will be alot more organised in the future.
This is a good idea.
Honestly you haven't handled this very well. You've firstly told them you can't pay it back and then ignored their responses. They probably don't even believe you didn't notice the payment so you've totally soured the relationship between the two of you.
Your best bet now is probably to ring them up, tell them you're short on cash at the moment but having assessed your finances you can afford £100 a month and then keep the payments up. Telling them you can't afford it won't cut it. After all if they took it to court then ultimately you've got assets that could be seized to pay the debt and that's a route that no one is likely to want.0 -
Why would they? The OP invoices the company because they are self employed as a consultant/ contractor. So the company didn't have to provide anything, just make sure that they received the invoice. And so they would give a payslip - they don't employ the OP. The invoice comes from the OP, and if anyone provides a receipt it would be the OP!No,

It was a mistake. They happen. Obviously someone mistakenly actioned an invoice twice.
As someone who does take on consultancy work from time to time, it's my responsibility to check my accounts and balances - if for no other reason than to correctly inform HMRC of my earnings and tax liabilities. I'd notice if there were payments I wasn't expecting. I believe the OP didn't notice, but that is careless and I'm sure the lesson is learned - presumably if they don't check their accounts carefully, they'd equally not notice if someone failed to pay!0
