I have seen a deal for 40gb and 60gb for same price but 40gb has better games and blue ray discs. My hubby wont play old ps2 games on it and don't think he will use up loads of memory, so is this only difference not sure what to get.

they can play on the 60gb model but not the 40gb model.

does anyone know if it is worth buying from the states as I am told the usa model will play uk games but not sure about broadband compatabilty or if different power (electric) supply would effect performance ?

You'd need to get a power adaptor, and it might play different region coded blu-ray films (not many discs today are coded to date, but that might change). Otherwise, no need to worry about the network connection. Oh, but it will register online to the US site and not UK.

Littlewoods direct have the PS3 60gb for £329 and there are codes around. However there is a lot of negative talk about Littlewoods at the moment(for good reason I know) so although I have ordered using codes and phoned to check again this morning I will wait and see what happens. Order due around 19/11 and if all goes well, price under £250.
The above price is reduced from £529 and they have other packages available with games or with the 40gb console.
