You have to outline why you think you would be good for the role, templates give you a better idea.0

Illustrate how your experience/skills are relevant to those required by the role. Do not use the same template letter for every application, any more than you would use exactly the same CV. Make it relevant.
If you cared to tell us what the job role is and to give a quick precis of your knowledge/experience, we might be able to make some suggestions of phrases you could include.0 -

Something like this:Dear <sir, madam, fishface, etc>,
Re: Application for <position> at <somewhere>
Please find attached a copy of my CV/application form in application for <the job title> at <company name>.
I have worked in <an appropriate field> for <x> years and have gathered a large range of experience in <this field> which is put to good use as a <whatever you do now or most recently did>. This involved <whatever the job involved> and <some other skills that are listed in the person spec>
In my previous/current employment at <somewhere>, I was responsible for <this, that and the other>, ensuring <this that and the other> was completed to a high standard/in good time to ensure other work flow could be done. This is a skill I can easily transfer to this position as a <job title> with <company>
<insert another two or three skills or requirements from the advert and write something here about how you have those skills, how good you are at this stuff and back it up with actual examples. Use the job description and person spec and show that you've actually read them!>
Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon. I can be contacted on 07xxx xxxxx if you would like to discuss my application further.
Yours sincerely/faithfully,
Scooby Doo
TL;DR - sell yourself. In a six way split between Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, Scooby and yourself, why should the company employ you and not Fred for this job? Why do you think you're perfect for this role? What can you bring to it?0 -
I'd say be honest and be specific. I've seen so many cover letters that are generic and just say the same old stuff. I'm trustworthy, I'm a good team player, I'm enthusiastic, I'm a self starter, I'm dynamic etc! It's boring and there is nothing to indicate its true.
Give examples of why you are xyz. Make the letter specific to the role as well. Read the person specifications and give examples of how you meet them. Remember to read it back in case auto correct does something silly or you miss out a word! I sent a cover letter last year stating I had lots of dope! What I meant was scope, but I touched the wrong key and didn't check it until it was too late!0
