New Twitter Scam, Well They Tried!

I won a comp & the person I won it from announced that I was the winner on twitter. So I said thanks & contacted the agency involved.
But someone else also claimed that they were my twitter username & gave the agency their email address.
Thankfully the agency & person I won from are savvy & sent me & the other person out a email & not surprising I was the only one who replied (won't say what the email was as we don't want to wise the scammers up do we)
This agency & the person who I won from have never seen this happen before. But being savvy people they are now going through the entries to see if this person had even entered the comp & to see if they can find out more info from that as they already have a email address they have reported them to action Fraud as they tried to commit fraud.
I thought I would put this here to give everyone a heads up in case it happens again to anyone else.

Thanks for posting. This happened to me in exactly the same way with a You Tube competition, and an email was sent out with a question to sort it out exactly as you described.0

have seen accounts on twitter change their name to look the same as a winners and try to claim the prize. eg if a compers name used a lower case L in their name the scammer would use an I so that they look the same. You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I hate it when companies announce the winner and then say "email us to claim your prize". It's so open to abuse I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. I had assumed it was because there was one inexperienced person running it, rather than a specialist agency though.
At least it got sorted out. Did they DM you on twitter to confirm your email address or give you a codeword or something? I had that once and wondered if something similar may have happened to me, they just didn't tell me.
There are some total chockwombles out there. :mad:Thanks to the members that post competitions, especially the regulars :A0 -
True story - I know of a wanna-be fraudster who set up a FB account in the name of an MSEer when she was announced as the winner of.... a mop! LMAO!Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0

there was a similar thing going on AVforums..
scammers would check the feedback of regular members, then create a username that was very close to the original maybe adding one digit.
They would then scam people, by making out they were contacting them about their interest in items for sale on the forum - posted by the genuine member - obviously with a view to getting money for nothing.
Good to be on your guard right..0 -
There was a thing about a Facebook page (it was a computery type site, OC3D / Scan or something) having the same issue, someone changed their Facebook name and picture and tried to claim a prize, seems pretty prevalent at the moment.0
