Being chased for a debt which was paid off and then sold - Help please

Hi I am being chased for a debt and they want to take me to court.
Situation is his had a credit card and paid off in 2012 but continued making payments as money not applied to account. 2014 ceased to pay then debt sold on. They stared court proceedings in 2016
In Jan 2018 original owner of it came and said had money and were returning it to me still bein pursued despite original debt having been sold when no debt owed
Have not ot the money anymore as out of work and spent it on necessities food etc
