It all depends how flexible your job is. For instance I can "buy" extra leave and get 40 days leave a year, plus I work shifts which are flexible and colleagues who are willing to swap, so with shift days off on top of leave I have easily enough time off to get all the stuff done I want to do. Can also work from home, or basically anywhere with wifi. On top of all that I can take sabbaticals, which I might do next year.

My job is very flexible, but I still want to wake up knowing my time is my own and not have to answer to anyone.

The only time that has ever happened was the first few weeks after being made redundant about 4/5 years ago. I had a healthy redundancy package and no fear of running short of money at that point.

For a brief window of time I could do as I pleased. I would wake up every morning feeling 'unburdened', both mentally and physically.

I can't describe the immense pleasure of that freedom, of feeling no-one had a hold over me anymore.

I don't think I've felt anyone has "a hold over me" for years! Well, not my job anyway - maybe the wife ;)

I'm now at the stage where I can afford to retire, but I don't want to because I'm still enjoying the job. There are some aspects of my work that I enjoy probably more than any of my hobbies, and I'd really miss if I gave up work. Sometimes when I've involved in something really interesting I go in on a scheduled day off and just take another day intead. And vv.

Knowing that work is effectively "voluntary" means they have no "hold" over me. I avoid the boring stuff as much as I can. It might get me marked down in my appraisal, but I simply don't care. They know the score. Loads of other the same at our place, some are pushing 70 and are only in work because they enjoy it!

There is some boring stuff that can't be avoided, but that's the same with things you do for enjoyment. A trip to Rome? There'll be some tedious waiting round at airports, boring flights, passport, baggage queues etc.

It really depends how you view your job I guess. To me it's an optional hobby which I can give up whenever I want.

OP, I was like you, I never had a calling or found a job that really grabbed me, until at 40 I spotted an opportunity and started my own business. 14 years on I'm now tired and looking at walking away from it in 15-18 months time, if I can keep going that long. OH doesn't want to give up work yet but that's his choice, I've done my bit for our mutual pot.

I'm looking forward to moving to a new area and starting a new life. Some of that will involve volunteer work and taking up some new hobbies. Should I get completely bored I'll see if I can find some part time work, but nothing with any pressure, can't be !!!!!d with that anymore,

Too late: the reference was in the dock on my Mac and I cleared it last night. Try googling Lloyd George 1915 or the like. It was a WKPD piece, I think.

    I think I found it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rents_and_Mortgage_Interest_Restriction_Act_1915
The article is wrong. Regulated tenancies and thus rents were not abolished in 1989. Rather the default for new tenancies was changed.

four years ago around 100,000 refulated tenancies were supposed to still exist.
Controlled tanancies as introduced in 1915 could not be created after 1957 but weren't abolished until 1980 when they were converted to regulated tenancies.
