Are any of you on here supply teachers?
I started supply in January and will start full time in September. I am panicking about the summer holidays as I won’t have any income at all from the end of July until the end of October.
What do you do when you don’t get paid? I’m really worried about paying my rent and bills etc

Why don't you do home tutoring over the summer holidays? Nice little as I know someone who does this.Save Save Save:o

Why won't you get paid until the end of October? There should be a pay packet at the end of September.0

When I have done supply work in the past, I was paid at the end of the following month. So any supply work you do in July should be paid at the end of August. Hopefully that will cover you some way until being paid at the end of Sept ( I'm assuming you mean a full time regular contract rather than supply for Sept.)paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . I do some supply, but don't rely on it for bills etc, for which I am very thankful.
I'm paid weekly for the work I do (so paid tomorrow for last week)
I'm assuming you will be going onto a standard teacher's contract starting on the 1st September? In which case you will be paid in September - depending on the local authority/academy this will either be the middle or end of the month, so things might not be as bad as you fear.
If you've been working full time for your agency they may have been keeping back some of your few as Holiday pay which I believe you have to request to be paid (might be worth finding out- mine don't, so it's my responsibility to save for holidays)
Other than that is a case of tightening your belt now, 7 weeks until the English summer break needs to be as frugal as possible to cover the 8-10 week's until you will be paid your salary from the new job.
Other than that it's upping income in all the ways suggested on these boards.Outstanding mortgage: £23,181 (December 19)

Are you starting a full time post in September? If so, you will be paid for that at the end of September? Do you do your supply through the local council? If so, as someone mentioned, any work you do in July will be paid at the end of August. Otherwise, though it may be a little late now, the answer is to put a little aside each month from the higher paid months to cover the lower paid months. Or, can you look for some bar work/shop work or something over the Summer months?Starting a new debt free journeyStarting Debt: £5,250Current Debt: £4,995.50Amount Paid: £254.50 Percentage Paid: 4.84%Emergency Fund: £3500

Most (and I say this from working for 3 supply companies but I am sure others work differently) supply work is paid weekly in arrears, and work is often sparse the last couple weeks before holidays so a potential 8 week gap.
Supply teachers generally don't get to claim benefits in the holiday periods as they have chosen to work term time and the working pattern is in line with their pattern of work. How that works with the new UC I don't know as I stopped my supply work before UC came in.
best option would be to pick up a small job over Summer or save all of your supply money until now, as you are paid a higher rate for each supply day to cover holiday periods.0 -
Thank you.
Yes I meant to say that I would be paid in the end of September.
As some of the other posters have said, I get paid weekly in arrears. My agency doesn!!!8217;t put money aside for holidays.
I am on a Token Repayment Plan through Stepchange so have no extra money to it away weekly to help with the holidays.
I!!!8217;m thinking about tutoring as that was mentioned. I think this would be better than temping as I will need to go into school during the holidays.
Would it be best to advertise on Facebookdo you think?0 -
I have found tutorhunt very effective (I haven't tried anywhere else)0

You used to be able to claim the old job seeker's allowance over the holidays, providing you were seeking work that is. It's obviously not as much as a teaching salary but might ease the pressure whilst you secured some temping work.
Some supply agencies hold back salary and pay out at Christmas, Easter and Summer and some expect you to put the money away yourself (it works out at something like 10 for every 100 you earn to see you through the holidays). You need to be disciplined, that's all.
July is also a short month in terms of earnings so you would need to factor that in too.0
