I went to NY a few years ago with friends in early dec, when we got back I bought some stars & stripes material and covered a photo album and added some photos. You could do this in apprehension of your trip.

Put her a tube of foot lotion in the basket; both times I've been to NY we've walked miles & my feet were killing me!
The film/TV location DVD is a good idea - you can usually pick up a cheap friends or sex in the city DVD from somewhere.

We went to New York a few years ago and I can't recommend this highly enough....
there is an organisation called 'Big Apple Greeters' with over 300 volunteers whose whole aim is to encourage local/native New Yorkers to introduce visitors to NY.
Best of all it's absolutely :j FREE! :j

You do have to book in advance (well before you go) and stipulate how many in your party, ages and interests. The organisation then matches you with a suitable volunteer who will meet you on your chosen day and spend a couple of hours (sometimes more) taking you to some of the places you might not otherwise see/find.

The lady who took us round was a wonderful Jewish septuagenarian who was as sprightly as a mountain goat and whizzed us round all sorts of really interesting places whilst giving the children little packets of raisins and drinks as she went! She even gave us a day pass to the underground and buses (which we could use for the whole day even after she left us).
I don't think I have ever felt so kindly or altruistically treated. The organisation makes it absolutely clear that no tips/gratuities are allowed... the lady was just so keen to show us the hidden parts of her city and told us so much of the history... it was amazing! Obviously, as it's voluntary I guess it is a little 'pot luck' who you get but if our guide was anything to go by...stand by to be amazed! You could book a 'Big Apple Greeter' for your sister and print off the details of the organisation, times etc.
    Hope this helps
