Hi all,
I dont know if i am in the right place but i am desperately unhappy:( and need some advice form anyone who may be able to help me. Its a long one sorry!
I recently started working for a local Charity and committee run preschool and was a on a 3 month probationary period, 7 days after my 1st months probation which was great and 100% positive:j , i was told they had to 'let me go' and refused to give me a reason:eek: , the chairperson of the committee said that it was at the disgression of the perschool manager if she wished to divulge why i was being sacked, (this lady was not the one who gave me the job, she started the same day as me, and had made it quite clear she didnt like me, the previous manager left for health reasons, also the chairperson changed after i started so the original chairperson gave me the job not the current one!)
The manager refused to say why i was being sacked and just said 'it wasnt working out', i questioned this and asked why it hadnt been brought up at my appraisal and they said i hadnt actually done anything wrong and that i was a fantastic worker and that i would do very well in a childcare role!
Anyway to cut a long story short, i was devastated but brushed myself off and got on with my life, this was 3 weeks ago.
Problem is that i work in the local pub and this is a very 'clicky' village, last night a work coleague told me he had heard someone discussing why i had been sacked and that it was due to 'improper conduct'! Also that i am an untrustworthy person to whom you should never lend any money to!
This was apparently passed from someone who overheard someone else who overheard someone else, you get the idea!
I am mortified and have spoken to ACAS who have advised me that legally they dont have to give me a reason but that they shouldnt be spreading rumours, and that i should get some legal advice, as this may be slander/or defarmation (spelling!) of character? i cant find anyone who gives free advice anymore though!
I just want people to know i have done nothing wrong, as i am a mum myself and know that i too would be jumping to conclusions a the job involved children!
Basically i want my nme cleared and for people to stop gossiping about me!
Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated as i am on the verge of quitting this job to avoid the situation and then would really be in financial trouble!
Thanks in advance!

sorry this has happened to u but i sort of know how u feel... i too live in a village and when i left my ex all sorts of stories were going round about i had been cheating on him etc etc
i was soo angry when i found out as it could of got back to my kids etc but in the end i just decided to hell with them they could say what they want i knew the truth as did my friends and i would ignore the gossips
i am sorry to say there will always be people who gossip even when there is nothing to gossip about they just make something up, its quite probable that the talk has come from another source and is nothing to do with the job u lost
i know its not much advice but rise above it and make sure if a friend hears that sort of talk again they say loudly well that is no way true cos i know her, dont leave your pub job u will only give them more fuel for the fire....
if u actually find out who the main stories are coming from write them a letter threatening them with a solicitor (i did this after 5yrs a certain person told someone BAD stories about me what they didnt know is that someone was a friend of mine and i decided enough was enough)
sorry u are going thru this but u know u are honest and thats what matters not some small minded village gossips opinion
good luck

I'm sorry to hear about your sitution. I do have one idea for you. Could you ask the preschool charity for a job reference? They could refuse but is unlikely, but they can't lie in the content. So if they can say something like you are a good worker, ideal with kids etc in the reference, that in itself should help you feel better. It should also answer the gossips as they won't put down dishonesty as its untrue.
Just a thought, hope you get past this problem, life's too short to dwell to worry about village gossips. From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings
