greenhouse glass

I lost about 50 panes of glass during the storms earlier this year
Anyone know a cheap place to buy new or second hand glass. I can cut it myself, so don't mind about the size. Any idea on prices would be handy.
I haven't tried any companies yet, as I thought, someone will have already gone through this
I'm in Waringstown but will consider anywhere.

I think you'll find most glazing companies keep glass cut to correct size for greenhouses. It seems the panes are of a standard size. I contacted a local glazier for a couple of panes for my father in North West area. He had them pre cut for a 4 pound eachI started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p0

Thanks for the reply, but is that £4 each! Yikes.0

Would PVA not be cheaper and better?0

Any alternatives I have looked at, have been dearer, but I am not familiar with PVA.0

You get then in standard sizes 18X24 inch and 24X24 inch and possibly other sizes. As said glaziers keep them already cut in stock. I got 2X24X24 + 1X18X24 for about £12 in Mid Antrim area but they only had about half a dozen of each in stock. Bulk purchases maybe a lot cheaper.
BTW I have known people to successfully claim greenhouse storm damage on their house insurance. Also it looks like storms in the future will not be getting any less violent, so perhaps looking at ways of migrating the problem in the future is required.0 -
Thanks. I will check out the insurance.
I am worried about future breakage, if this becomes the norm.
I do have a 30ft poly tunnel but its hard to heat when the weather gets colder and hard to cool in current situation. ( it was over 40 C yesterday. I guess thats not something I will have to worry about on a regular basis)

If it makes you feel any better, I lost just one large pane from my greenhouse last year. (Mr S cut the grass without checking for little stones first - you get the picture) - and the cut-to-measure toughened replacement was £32.
To be fair, this was our first breakage in 12 years - the toughened glass has otherwise stood up to tempest and next door's footballs - so it wasn't too bad.
Assuming that 50 planes of toughened glass (that's some greenhouse - drool!) is a non-starter, I'd have thought that the £4 already quoted is well cheap. Polycarbonate sheets are stronger than glass, but likely to be more than £4 each.0 -
Freecycle? People often offer old greenhouses free to anyone who dismantles, and as most use the same size glass you could save a packet for a few hours work.
You could probably flog the dismantled Aluminium to a local scrap metal dealer to cover the cost of petrol.
edit - just realised you might need a couple of donor greenhouses to get 50 sheets. That's a lot of (expensive) glass you need.0
