Coffee in the freezer - why ?

I notice that other people often keep ground coffee in the freezer, and I wonder why. If there's a good reason, I'll start doing it, because you can use the coffee straight from the freezer. And is it just the opened packets that you put in, or the unopened ones as well ?

It just keeps it fresh that's all. Really only worth doing with unopened packs, unless you are only a very occasional coffee drinker. I freeze both 250 grm ground coffee packs, and beans in 1 kg bags. I actually by all my coffee in France as it's half the price with twice the choice. If you do freeze opened packs then take them out well in advance of using as if the grounds are very cold they will adversely affect the flavour of your next brew.0

Thanks - that's great. I've been keeping my illy metal tin in the freezer and it don't half chill the mitts when I take it out. Will return it to the cupbaord and just freeze the unopened packets.:AAll Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

I only empty a third to a half of a packet of coffee into the caddy and keep the packet in the freezer firmly sealed with a clippit - it seems to me that the "just opened" freshness lasts for longer.
The unopened packets are vacuum sealed so I leave tehm in a cupboard.0 -
I have two conflicting views here: lolarentt says "Really only worth doing with unopened packs," and Seakay says " The unopened packets are vacuum sealed so I leave tehm in a cupboard."
I'd be really interested in what others thinkAll Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

I used* to keep my opened ones in the freezer, or the stuff bought from our local shop where they grind it in front of you
can't see the point of keeping the vacuum sealed** kind with a best-before date in the freezer
*not allowed coffee anymore
EDIT ... **I meant unopened vacuum sealed ones0 -
Right, I keep my ground coffee in the freezer because as soon as you 'grind' a coffee bean they will begin to go stale. Also same as 'as soon as you open' a vacuum sealed coffee packet, they will start to go stale. Especially if you are an occassional coffee drinker. I kept a scoop in the freezer bag of my coffee and every morning I'd just scoop some out and make coffee. It didn't affect my coffee flavour at all and in fact always tasted very fresh. HTH.
By the way, I used re-sealable freezer bags and got rid of the coffee packaging all together.0 -
I keep unopened/sealed bags in the cupboard.
but once opened they go straight in to the freezer as they stay fresh for up to 3 months.
Well thats the advice on the side of the packet. It seems to work.0 -

Absolutely no problem freezing coffee as long as it is in an airtight bag/container.0

We do it all the time in work, beans and ground. It stays much fresher than if it was out in the cupboard. As M.E said make sure its in an airtight container.0
