X-box One mic (not headphones/headset)

Hi there, my kids want to be able to interact with others on their X-box One, but I'm not wild about them having headsets for a number of reasons.
1. I want them to be aware of what's going on in the outside world (eg being called for tea, etc.)
2. I want to have some awareness on what others are saying (I know some can be pretty foul-mouthed and, whilst I don't wish to pry, I want to be aware of it)
So I'd rather they have a mic so they can talk, and the sound comes through the TV. I think I'm right in saying this can be done, although it doesn't seem to be a common way of doing things surprisingly.
Can someone advise me what mic to get? I did have a small one kicking around that came with a DJI Osmo Mobile, but that didn't seem to work for some reason when plugged into a controller, so I wondered whether I need to look for a particular type of mic.
Thanks.

Ive only used the official headsets and if I remember correctly you could change the settings so the sound or voice came through the TV speakers and mic.
1 option is to move the console to the living room BUT you say kids so I guess its 2 consoles so moving them wont work.
I believe you can reduce the foul-mouthed part by the of them being in a party with people they know.
Have you set the accounts up as child accounts ? You can set screen time they get eg set for 1 hour from when they get home to when tea is ready, ok so you can't predict that no harm in them watching some TV.0 -
I'm away from my xbox so can't fully remember the menu options but try looking in the settings to get the chat to come out the TV:
Settings - Devices - Audio Devices - Output - TV Speakers
See if there may be an option under there. I can confirm later when I'm home if that helps?0 -
Theres a turtle beach mic that works with xbox one.
This one...

Most USB mic wont work as the software isnt compatible. Youll probably be looking at the more xbox specific brands.
You can apparently plug a microphone with a 3.5mm jack in to the controller for it to t work but im guessing this is a similar approach to what youve tried with the phone mic. Although ive notice with phone head pieces they tend to be quite sporadic in working, eg if i plug it in to my computer i have to keep a button depressed in order to hear the sound properly. So there might be specific compatability issues with using the microphone/headphone devices from phones.
Change the setting on the xbox to enable party chat to go through the tv speakers.0 -
just get a kinect bar, they have a mic in them, my son uses his for chat now and then, got them used for £20 in my local cash generators..0
