Building a fire pit

So I am currently doing a fair bit in my garden to tidy it up & I am wanting to build/make a fire pit.
Im planning to dig a fair way down (18 inches) remove the soil, add some stones/gravel for drainage then top up with sand. I have a lot of ordinary bricks in the shed which were left there by the old owner which I thought I could use as the walls of the pit if that makes sense? But what I would like to know is are they safe to use?
Diolch!
