Nervous about handing in one week notice.

Hi all,

I'm planning to hand in my notice tomorrow to my current job but I'm feeling very nervous about it. I've been with the company since November last year and haven't really enjoyed it. Over the last couple of months I've felt very undervalued and unappreciated as a worker and feel the work environment has a lot of cliques and management has their favourites. I've been offered a new job with a small local company. It's a 12 month contract initially but I feel it would be better for me as opposed to feeling miserable in my current position everyday.

It's a one week notice my contract states in my current job so my plan was to hand it in tomorrow and my last shift would be this coming Saturday. However I'm really nervous about it. The store manager has been on maternity leave since January so the deputy has been doing her job however she's been on annual leave this past week and is due back tomorrow. I worry about her reaction as it's not a nice thing to come back to work to and have to redo rotas and be a staff member down especially since I know its quite a long recruitment process where I currently am.
I don't know why I'm so nervous about doing this as I've had other jobs where I've had to hand in notice and I've felt OK doing it.

Don't worry about what they have to do when you resign. It is part of management's job to deal with that.

Would you normally be expected to work on the following Monday? If so then technically if you hand in your notice tomorrow (Monday) at whatever time then it begins to run from Tuesday and your last day of employment would be the following Monday. Perhaps they would not keep you to that but bear in mind that they could.

Do your written particulars of employment require one week's notice? That is the statutory notice period as you have been there for more than a month but some employers do require more. They can't make it up now but it is whatever was written in your original documents.
  • Try and think it could be a whole lot worse - your resignation as someone is about to go on holiday could make things very awkward - but - you've least allowed someone to have a holiday and then come back to this so you've nothing to be afraid of unless you are having doubts and this would be the best time for that. Better to learn good things before leaving rather then afters.

They will have had others resign before and so they will cope.

The best part about a fixed term contract is that if it runs it's course, next time you may not be in the ackward position of you giving notice.

There's nothing to be nervous about. The job isn't turning out as you expected so you are moving on. It happens every day and the world won't end because you are leaving :-) If you only have to give 1 weeks notice you are in a role which they believe can be quickly filled. It may be a bit awkward for them in the short term but they will get by.

Don't worry about it. I'm sure the manager has dealt with people resigning before - it is simply part of the job.

If it was that difficult for them to deal with leavers, your contract would have a longer notice period in it.

I think you just need to be positive - say that you've decided to move on and thank them for the opportunity. No need to put a negative spin on it.
