Windows update warning

I got an innocent looking pop up on my laptop, asking if I wanted to restart now, or be reminded later for Windows 10 April 2018 update. It took two hours! Two flaming hours! Several times it seemed to just freeze for around 20 mins, making me wonder if my lappy had crashed.

Be prepared folk

Just to add, I suspect it has something to do with the dreaded GPDR thing. When it finally let me back in to my lappy, I got several questions asking for permissions re data use.

Only 2 hours - you were lucky, mine took nearly 3 hours.

Didn't ask any questions when it was all done, though.

EDIT - This is the 1803 update to the latest version - think it's being rolled out to the UK over the past few days.

It's the April 2018 Windows update (1803). There will be major Windows updates every 6 months for Windows 10 I'm afraid.

It only took about 20 minutes on my laptop and desktop. Is your laptop quite old?

I've spent around 10 days trying to sort this out.

The update downloaded over 20 times but refused to install. I asked questions at Microsoft support and Lenovo (my PC manuacturer).

Tried several solutions, but none seemed to work. Yesterday I decided to go back to factory settings, and (hopefully) get back up and running.

If that doesn't work, will have to take my laptop somewhere to sort out.

Microsoft have a lot to answer for!

I have a Lenovo desktop and it hates windows updates. Half my drivers are !!!!!!ed and can't get new ones that work. Keep having to do a system restore to keep it usable. Seriously considering an apple in the not too distant future - hate ruddy Microsoft now.

At one point, I rang a computer repair place and had a chat and they said because I got the free windows 10 version when it first came out I might have to buy a new edition of windows 10 to install - which still might not work - so I thought sod that.

Anyways I have mine in a usable condition and got me a chrome book for back up till I decide what to do in the long run. And I always set a restore point after a windows update warming. Half my peripherals don't work properly and there's loads of bugs but I'm trundling on for the mo.

Ouch! Re some of the problems. Microsoft should build in a system restore point as the starter for each update, or at least open with a suggestion/link to do this. I always mean to do this prior to OK-ing updates, but never remember in time.

Peter888 you should never ask 'a lady' how old her laptop is! But yes, mine is probably not far from being pensioned off.

I'm still running windows 8. Every time it fluffs up,it ends up being restored to factory settings anyway. Mine is on it's last legs so I avoid updates at all costs as it can't deal with them (last lot I bothered with lasted well over a day, not fun) this is probably the longest I've had a laptop last, despite it's faults it's been a good run-shame they don't make them anymore. Looks like my new one will be a Lenovo.

Having read this thread yesterday and getting the nagging update message, I thought I'd let it chug away overnight, so that it was all sorted for this morning.
    Wrong!!!

I went for the 'Update & shutdown' option from the start menu last night and it did some stuff before it switched off. However, it still took over an hour to finish installing when I switched on this morning.

It wouldn't be so bad it the updates actually did something useful. In this one MS have removed file sharing using the Homegroup. I think, you now need to set up the sharing permissions for each user on each PC in the home network - thanks Microsoft!
