Help I'm Dozey!

When I got into debt with my bank I was advised by the CCS to leave that bank and set out a new account elsewhere. I had an overdraft of £550.00 and was told to ask the bank in a letter to freeze the interest and except payment of £5.00 per month, after a while I rang the bank as they wanted to know if I was in a position to pay off the debt and told me that I was now in debt for over £1000.00 as the interest couldn't be stopped if I was only paying £5.00 I agreed to up the payments to £7.50 and then they would freeze the interest, is this right as I still don't trust them.

sounds like they have been taking more than interest. get the bank statements out and see what charges are on them.

unfortunately as bank charge claims are on hold theres no quick fix. it sure sounds like there are a lot of charges in there. interest wouldnt mount up that quick in a year.

hope someone else can give some help as im blank on this one and thoroughly fed up with banks.

  • Thanks for at least trying to help, mine seems a small problem comparing to some that I've read.
  • hi if you were unemployed for some or all of the time the charges were made im pretty sure that you can claim them back immediately under the social security act 1992,it is unlawful for companys to ask you to pay unfair charges when you already live on breadline money (benefits)
  • I am a lone parent, worked regular nights for 14 years until I was taken ill with angina and had to finish work. How do I even start the debts mounted up when I finished work, suffered from depression but coping better now and just want to get sorted.

This isn't true and gives people false expectations.

it is unlawful for anyone to make you pay unfair charges, whether you are on benefits or not. Since the level of bank charges have not yet been ruled unlawful (the charges themselves would seem lawful) they must still be paid. As said above anything else raises expectations.

In any case, if the OP did move her bank account elsewhere and the interest/charges mounted in the meantime, in what way is that in the slightest connected to taking money out of the benefits? The bank don't seem to have had sight of any of this money!
