How important is work location to you?

I'm retired now (thankfully:)) - but, whilst still working I placed very high priority on my workplace at least not being too inconveniently located.
I've only ever had a poorly-paid job. If I'd had a reasonably to well-paid career I would probably have been prepared to make more concessions for the location of my workplace.
But - for a poorly-paid job = no concessions whatsoever if I could possibly help it. For a job like that it basically HAD to be:
- walking distance from my home
- conveniently enough located I could do normal shopping/etc on my way to & from work and/or at lunchbreak time.
Latterly - for many years - I was in a reasonable-looking location that was a few minutes walk to a shopping centre. Then the employer tried to re-locate to a location to suit themselves and that would have been a few miles out of the city. Thankfully the employer wasnt able to get it past the staff to re-locate where they wanted to:D:T and the re-location was to a very convenient location:D. I was able to do pretty much everything en route to/from work or at lunchtime and was readily able to nip out at lunchtime and do some shopping or socialising:D
That job was b***** awful for many years latterly and the (very convenient) location helped a lot when it came to gritting my teeth and hanging onto that awful job. I always knew I could just walk out the door and spend some time shopping/socialising/etc/etc during my lunchbreak and that helped me survive in that job until released from it by retirement.
It was very beneficial to know there were all those shops/places to eat out/chance to sit and eat my packed lunch out somewhere "green" if the weather was good enough and literally the second I walked out the door at the end of the workday = bingo...I was back into "My Life" and away from that darn employer:j0 -
I spent a few years with a job walking distance (was 2 miles each way) to work. Now have to catch the bus so waste the first hours wage (and an hour return of my life) getting to and from work. If it didn't pay so well due to shift length I'd look for something else but for the job it pays ok.:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

For me, it's more about length and quality of commute.
For instance, a couple of jobs back I changed from a 30 minutes commute to a 45 minute one, but it was also a change from busy and often slow motorways to (usually fairly quiet) country roads, so I was comfortable with the extra time.
Location in terms of local amenities isn't hugely important to me, but I could see it being a factor if I were reliant on public transport, so running errands was more difficult.
Right now, I work 3 miles from home, and would need a very large incentive to go back to having a longer commute! All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Being on the move all day for a job so location isnt a massive issue, however i do need to sign on at a designated location.
3 within 15 mins of home & the other 2 being kings cross or cambridge. We have no canteen so i make sure i eat before work (late shifts) and take snacks. I do get to mooch places if i have time on my break but usually im happy with just sitting and chilling for a bit.
I personally wouldnt want to travel anymore than i do now but as for location its pretty good and im happy.0 -
I'm currently based on an industrial estate. Very tatty and no shops or anything of interest nearby. My lunch break is short and I don't socialize after work so it doesn't matter. Personally I don't care what the location is like. Distance and time to get there is most important in terms of location. I'm currently 8 mins from home but I hate the job! I'm searching now and would love a role close by but if it means a bit of a drive so be it.0
