Advice for my brother ... kind of DFW

Hiya all, wanting to pick your brains.

My brother is currently a mature student so is living off student grants/loans/part time bar work. He is always skint and had a loan from before he went to Uni last year (he was in full time employment before). He was 2 months off clearing it, and has just taken out a new 3 year loan at twice the cost per month

Out of this loan he has cleared his credit card. He has a 0% student overdraft, but I don't think he is clearing this off with it. The bulk of it is going towards paying a friend, which is the bit I need advice on.

Earlier in the year he drove his friends car without insurance to give someone a lift. It turns out his friend wasn't insured at the time either as it had expired. Silly lads, I know. Anyway, my brother had an accident in the car so has been taken to court. The court case has just been heard 3 weeks ago in his absence, as he received no letter about it. He has got a £375 fine and 7 points on his license. Fair enough, he broke the law.

Anyway, the lad expected him to pay up £1700 which is what he said he paid for the car. Stupidly, my brother agreed without question because he thought the car was a right off and his mate would have to buy a new car. Since, he has had the car repaired and is asking for the money. The repairs were done at a friend of the family's garage and no agreement was made about the cost of these, or getting another quote etc. He thinks he is being ripped off now. He has paid up £300 so far, but is feeling a bit miffed about having to pay the rest now he has a fine to pay as well. He is thinking they should go halves on the cost, as his friend wasn't blameless, as he lent him the car knowing neither of them were insured to drive it.

So he has taken out this loan to pay his friend, but doesn't really want to pay him all of it. The lad wants another £1000 out of him now.

What would you do?
