what classes as household income??

Hi, I am starting to deal with my debts but wondering what classes as my household income. Debts are mine. I am a carer with two disabled ADULT children? Does the full amount they receive count, the amount they pay me for household expenses or is their income their own? And then , they are both on DLA, this covers costs disability related, does this add onto income.

    Hi,

DLA is disregarded when compiling a budget.

So just your income will matter.

Presumably they have other income other than DLA.

    Hi Grace68,

If they are adults, then the DLA is their income. However, what they contribute to the household bills/ to you, is your income along with anything else you may receive such as carers allowance. Hope that helps.

It does depend which debt solution (if any) you choose to use.

If your planning to go on a Debt Management Plan for example, you do not have to include income that is not yours, you can make the budget work in your favor and not divulge your children's income at all.

If it was a more formal solution, such as IVA or DRO then your budget would be open to more scrutiny.

There doesn't seem to be a fixed method for IVAs - if there should be, please can someone post a link.

For DROs disability benefits can effectively be disregarded entirely:
These benefits include Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance under the Industrial Injuries or War Pensions Schemes, Disability Living Allowance, War Pensioners Mobility Supplement or grants for the use of a vehicle, Personal Independence Payments and Armed Forces Independence Payments. In the case of these benefits payable to disabled people for their care, supervision or mobility needs, it is acceptable to record the same amount as expenditure.
