Can't have composite?

We had someone come round for a quote for a few things including a new front door. Turns out our front door height aperture is 1910mm and composite doors require an aperture of 1980mm.

Is there any truth to this?
Are my alternatives timber and upvc?

Sounds like you got a goon who is buying cheap of the rack. They can be made to any size if you go to a proper manufacturer, or someone who will go to one. The are also not expensive either. Maybe they just want rid of something they have is another thought.

My composite bought from a local firm is 1920. What else are you planning to buy from them and what other claims has he made? I would not give them a second chance there are plenty of good companies around.

Okay so the first company offered Palladio doors.


We had a second company round today who were offering Solidor but same problem - the height of the aperture means door + cill is too short for a Solidor composite.



I've had a look online. Palladio come in a minimum size of 1951mm. Solidor come in a minimum size of 1953mm


I think we are limited by what they offer. So I need to find someone who supplies and fits a shorter composite door.


Cranford, is your door a particular brand or just made by the local firm?


We don't have to have composite but we need to replace the front door and need to let in as much light as possible. We were looking at replacing the front porch, replace sliding patio doors with french doors, and replace an old wooden single pane window to double glazed upvc to bring it up to spec with the rest of the house.

Why not consider a nice solid wood front door?

My composite door was a Homesafe bought in 2012 from a Sussex local firm for about £950. Although the door is 1920 the opening for the frame is 2020.
Homesafe was re-branded to BritDoors in 2013.

Their site says they are made bespoke in the UK and not from imported standard length planks.
