New Privacy Law - Will it result in less comps?

Given the new rules that are coming in soon that restrict the data and contact permitted by companies - do you think there will be a huge drop in the, already dimininishing, number of comps? After all the reason they run them is partly for data colllection.

Would be interesting to know your thoughts on this.

No reason why it should - although in theory, as company e-mail lists shrink, they may run extra competitions to encourage more sign-ups (as far as I am aware they can still require a sign-up to enter a competition they just have to make it clear that is what you are doing/consenting to).

Having just done my GDPR training, companies have to clearly state what they are collecting your data for and they then can not use your data for any other purpose at all, apart from my they have collected it in the first place.

A company that collects your data to enter a competition, but has no mention of what else they will do with your data, can only use your data in relation to that comp. If they then send other information to you, regardless of whether you agreed to contact from that certain comp, they will be breaking the law.

Now I think if a company runs a comp that says sign up to receive our newsletter, we will contact you with offers and comp - can reuse your data, but only to contact you relating to their products and offers. Nothing else.

So I think from this we will see more signup competitions, I don't think there will be less comps because all comps raise brand awareness.

I think that's what I got from it!!

It is all about making the customer aware of what data is collected, and how it is going to be used.

This should increase the number of competitions posted.

Sounds like it could actually be a good thing then! Thanks

I've heard from a few people that it's going to reduce the number of competitions. That's why I am here now searching harder to find more!

I would imagine it will result in a lot more for a while at least.
