Rent to parents

Hi all,

I am 6 months into my bankruptcy which was indeed my best option. I have had to fill in the IPO Questionaire form for the insolvency agency when working but I have been 'topped up' from parents as I worked in a low paid job so was not required to pay anything back to my creditors.

I have now moved home and need to know if I can pay my parents rent appropriate to the going rate where I live to offset what I earn against my living expenses so I continue to avoid paying creditors back??

I need to avoid paying my creditors until I can be discharged after 12 months or I will be required to pay to creditors for up to 3 years and not be able to start again properly.

Thanks for your experiences in advance,

Hugo

If you pay your parents board and lodging, then you put that on your forms. Perfectly allowable.

  • I take it that all changes in jobs etc require a new IPO Questionaire completing ??

mmmmm, well, avoiding isnt quite the right term is it?

also, what you pay your parents might not be looked at as genuine...parent often lie for their kids...

while undischarged yes...ANY change in financial circumstances the OR has to be informed within 21 days of changes

  • maybe a poor choice of words but the sooner it is over the sooner I can start again. They would like rent but I cant afford it at present, so yes it would be a genuine payment.

Perfectly ok and reasonable for you to pay your parents something towards rent etc. Probably best to pay though a bank account and not in cash so if the OR wants 'evidence' at some point there is a paper trail of the payments.
