Underpaid Tax Appeal - where to go from here?

Hi,

I’m not sure if anyone can help.

I have been going through a long process of appealing my underpaid tax for 2016/17 of £604.

I intally appealed to HMRC in November 2017 by letter and they rejected my appeal. I appealed their rejection letter in February 2018 and have just received notification that this has again been rejected.

In the latest letter they have sent to me there is no suggestion of being able to appeal their decision and have said I need to set up payment with them for the underpaid tax.

The letter they last sent had no more details than the first letter they sent and seems one officer has just copied another officers letter which is really frustrating. As in this final letter there is no suggestion that I can appeal does this mean that I need to just give in and pay the money even though I am adamant that HMRC have got this wrong?

Is there any avenues I can go down? Tax aid I have tried and that hasn’t been to succesful in suggestions.

Thanks
Leon

The information on appealing tax decisions is here

    https://www.gov.uk/tax-appeals

Tax tribunal or ADR are routes of appeal if you disagree with HMRC's decision.
  • What notification did you receive to start with? Did you complete a Self Assessment return?

Do you understand why you underpaid tax?
  • Thank you for the link to tax appeals... it!!!8217;s just I don!!!8217;t think I can go to a tribunal unless the letter from HMRC says I am able to appeal, it just tells me to pay up basically...

In reply to dazed and confused...

    I received a P800 back in October 2017 stating I owed £604.

I ended up sending all of my details etc to tax aid so they could check for me and they believed it was an employer error from a previous employment that I no longer worked for after they ran a payroll 3 months after I!!!8217;d finished working for them.

I asked HMRC to clear this up for me and in their final letter all they have put is !!!8220;your underpayment was because of the type of tax code we had sent your new employer!!!8221; and that!!!8217;s all the officer had written after I!!!8217;d asked for them to clarify everything which is why it!!!8217;s a very frustrating situation with little clear answers.

    Thanks
