In a hole...but where to start digging?

Dear All,
I'm looking for some advice/help - I have a couple of problems that I need help with. The problem has arisen completely from my adoption of the 'head in the sand' method of debt management, but now I want to face up and sort these problems out.
Bit of background - I'm from the UK, but have lived and worked in Ireland for 4 years. When I was still in the Uk, I took out a personal loanof £5000 that I was paying back monthly. When I moved to Ireland, this became more difficult financially and logistically. After 18 months, a direct debit failed (again) and for once they didnt call or write. In my stupidity, I let it slide till the next month, then the next.....
anyway, to today, and I was cleaning out a drawer, and found a couple of lettes from January, the kind that looked dangerous so got filed away at the time. The letters are from January 2007, and are threatening legal action (They're from a debt recovery company). I called them today, and they dont have record of it any more, or any idea who does.
So I dont wanna run any more, I want to face up to this situation and start immediately to get to grips with this, only trouble is, since I moved house in March, and have received nothing since, I dont know where to start?
Also, at what stage of the process are proceeding likely to have reached? Is it possible I could have had a CCJ without my knowing about it?
Any hely gratefully received!

I would suggest getting your credit report from experian and equifax, that way you'll know about any CCJ's and it'll also give you a list of creditors to contact about starting to make repayments. Ring around, it cant be any worse than ignoring them.
EDIT: If you order your credit reports, request a paper version and pay just £2 each
