Hermes collection

I have a parcel for return to the retailer, and have opted for collection by the Hermes delivery van. I am beginning to wish that I had taken it to the local drop-off shop instead.

The retailer instructions are that the parcel is labelled in a particular way (fair enough, but they have provided a sticky return label, so why ask the customer to print off yet another label?), and that I should get a shipping receipt from Hermes when it's collected. Again, fair enough. What is bothering me is that I am supposed to get a Proof of Goods Dropped Off receipt when the driver has done his job.

Hermes don't keep anyone informed; they arrive unannounced, leave parcels in weird places and I expect that is because they are hurried. What if they don't email me a Dropped Off receipt? I have no recourse if the parcel goes missing. Has anyone had experience of this? I still have time to drive to the parcel shop.....
