hiya, i asked the same question as you before xmas, and ended up buying one for my 3 yo son. TBH I wasnt sure but he has cousins of the same age with one who love it. They do break easily so we bought a polycarbonate case which seems to be keeping well and some screen protectors (literally a few pence on ebay or can buy in an accessory pack) then i tied the stylus to the hinge on the polycarbonate case so that couldnt be lost and hey presto, a ds lite that is (almost) 3 yo proof! he loves playing the crayola game, cars racing game, disney friends and nintendogz so i am pleased i got it for him
for girls they make a great tinkerbell game too. I hope this helps

Hi would you purchase a Ds lite for a 3 year old to play with?
Niall
We waited but went for a leapster when he was 3 - touch screen and stylus etc and some games specifically aimed at 3 year olds - we do let him play our DS now he is 5 but felt it a bit soon before now.
Also, our 2 year old now grabs the Leapster and is using it almost like an etch a sketch drawing game - especially the colouring in game that is built in to the machine.
Leapsters are also a lot cheaper -especially on e-bay!0 -
Does anyone know if argos is still currently the cheapest place to buy a DS?Everything Happens for a Reason....0

No, my 3 year old broke mine and I was gutted.
She has a Leapster and a hand held V Tech Smile. Loves both of them.
The V Tech Smile was only £30 from Tesco and I bought a load of 2nd hand games from someone at work.
They stand up the to rough hands of a child and are more suited to their age range.I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 20100 -
