Word software..where's best place?

Pls excuse my ignorance in this department.
I've bought a laptop and realised it doesnt have Word with it.
I've been told i buy this separately.
I'm on a budget and would like u to recomm/ advise where i could go for Word and how much its likely to cost me.
Also, is it complicated to install ? I've got windows XP.
Thanks!!

Easy to install but look on ebay rather than go to PC world or somewhere, always plenty on offer. Make sure you get a genuine one though, not a copy!

Does it have to be MS Word, or could you use:

    http://www.openoffice.org/

    (which is free)?

  • Openoffice is good, free, software, but if you really want microsoft software, Microsoft Works is a cheaper alternative to microsoft office and does the same things.

If you absolutely have to have Microsoft Word, don't go for the latest version (Word 2007) Word 2003 is just as good, Word 97 is largely the same, but slightly less pretty!

Also if you do decide to buy Word, decide whether you just need Word or all of Office (ie, Publisher, Excel, Powerpoint etc) as the whole suite will obviously cost more.

Oh yes - both OpenOffice and Word are easy to install, OpenOffice has instructions on the website (I think you just download, click and then follow the on-screen prompts) and Word will come with a CD which you put in and follow the on-screen prompts.

Don't forget we can help if you have any problems :-)
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

For the real MS thing :

Amazon has Word for approx £88, but

Microsoft Office Student Edition seems to have become MS Office 2007 HOME and Student Edition.

It contains, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote and typically retails for approx £81.

    Including from Amazon ....

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...pf_rd_i=599892

But, best of all that is for a LEGAL 3 user licence!! So laptop and home pc....

And if your employer has signed up for a home user agreement (e.g. NHS) you can get MS Office Ultimate for even less (there's a thread about this elsewhere in the forums) ...

    P.S. Is OneNote actually useful?
