When to see a Mortgage Broker

Good Afternoon All
I am just after a little advise please. In about a year my husband and I would like to persue the idea of buying our own home, in the meantime we are saving up, but when should we see a broker.
Do we make an appointment soon so we know what we need to do to improve our chances (previous bad credit) or wait until we have the full deposit available?
