It shouldn't have taken me so long to realise, but there's a filter in the top right, you can select "Unread", and then just click the usual "select all" button and delete.
I've been manually clicking on the wee bullet for each email and deleting, the amount of times I've missed and inadvertantly opened the email only have to restart clicking them all.
