thats a good find i paid for one of these for my daughter and it says the probability of dyslexia is high

But getting the schools to act on it is another thing i have contacted the LEA but still no joy

I even said to the teacher if i save up and get a proper test done(£320) would she get extra help themn they said theres no point because she wouldnt get any extra help

Shes 13 now im just worried when she has to sit her exams

Anyway good find and hopefully some children who are or have been struggling will know its not their fault and their parents were right all the way along

Work in this area. She IS entitled to support if she turns out to be dyslexic, and she would be entitled to exam support too.

LEAs avoid recognition for cost reasons.

Get all the advice you can.

My advice is that you WILL need to get an ED Psych to do the full tests, or a teacher who is qualified to assess for exam support.

A lot of teachers are unaware; they are not experts in all areas. Even heads of SEN can be unaware.

You have legal entitlements if you get a Statement, through an ED Psych to start with.

Do all of this as soon as you can.

    Good luck.

  • loopylass is there a parent partnership group near you? they are there to support and advise parents with children who have additional needs. Please don't just acept what your school and LA tell you. It is your daughhters right to have additional support. Become the pushy parent, Cand she get a lap top from the dyslexia insitution? It is down to the school's discretion for her to be given extra time in exams, she could get upto 25% extra time.

just some thoughts - i am a teacher and a mother of a deaf child and i know from both sides that secondary education is not good fro SEN.

Good luck, go forth and battle...
  • What an excellent find!

I was lucky enough to have a good college who refered me to (and paid for)Ed Psych assessment when I was 17.

It cost a bomb, and that was only 7 years ago, but I have never regretted having the assessment.

Finding out I was dyslexic and not stupid got me the support I always needed, unfortunatley my schools never picked up on it and just labeled me as a slow and unwilling girl.

I am entitled to extra time in exams and someone to read the questions to me if needed. (I'm approaching completion of a gas engineering course and have loads of exams and have been allowed this)

So this is something I can really relate to.

    Keep badgering the authorities.

And it's right what the others are saying, you CAN get support. Don't give up!

It is NOT down to the school's discretion: armed with a diagnosis they have to give her the 25%, and other help depending on her abilities. Some students get a scribe, for example.
