Off sick and taking a holiday before returning to work

Think your jumping the gun. Sounds like the employee and employer have a good enough relationship. HR doesnt want to step on any toes and potentially get them in bother hence absolving themselves from any decision making in the process.
As for the stress, i think im the only person to have mentioned it in this thread? Op says theyve been hospitalised on a few occasions whilst not impossible with stress, it would be unusual.
Never said the OP had stress just that HR appear to want to cause it with their inability to repond to question a perfectly reasonable action that has nothing to do with them. (unless the nature of the illness does somehow impact upon the type of holiday).
The op can decide they are good for work and all HR can do is commision a report from the company doctor if they do not believe it. Which of course comes back to canceling their holiday and paying for losses (only reasonable).
But that's just my view of a normal company with knowing what we do.0 -

Partly for the optics but mostly because the anticipation of returning to work after a long absence won't cloud your holiday. You'll have already taken the sting out of it.
I think I'd have struggled to go in for a short time and then on holiday. Too much to do, too little time to do it ...
Work were fine with it, BUT for the OP, have you already booked this leave as annual leave? If you have, then it should be straightforward to communicate. "My GP is signing me as fit for work wef X date but I have pre-booked annual leave, expect me back on Y date."
You can also take a holiday within a period of sick leave: the OP is receiving full pay, but if you're on SSP you can book the leave and receive full pay for that period, as long as your employer is happy for you to book the leave. Agree that most companies will be happy with that, because you're accruing leave while you're sick, so taking some of it before returning to work reduces the amount you'll have.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
It is quite common for employment policies to say people can't take holidays after sick leave, so legislation won't help you. However, this is usually intended to stop people pulling sickies to make the holiday longer. Clearly this is not the case with you. HR's response seems to me as though they have no problem with it from a work perspective, but are suffering from medical paranoia and buck passing.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
