Tax rebates usually arise from when people stop working in the middle of the tax year, not when they start. The PAYE system should ensure that your tax allowance from earlier months when you weren't working is taken into account when you start.
Are you sure you're talking about Income tax deductions and not National Insuarance ?
It says Pay: £9,960.57 - Tax Deducted: 648.80. National Insurance isn't a tax, is it? So can't be NI.
Then it says This Employment
Pay * £9,960.57
Tax deducted or refunded. R * £648.80
- (The fifures marked * should be used for your Tax Return if you get one.)
PS. I am reading here from a P60 End of Year Certificate I got yesterday.0 -

National Insurance is a tax.
You could have probably received the income tax rebate already through the tax year by not paying any tax.
Rough calculation. If you earned £9960 over seven months, then that's £1423 per month average, so you would have been liable to pay National Insurance. Which would have worked out at around £90 per month, times that by seven months and you get £630.
You could not have avoided it, as any amount over £680 per month or £157 per week is taxed at 12% National Insurance.
Only you know the answer by looking at your actual payslips.
What does the March one say, what's the total gross pay and how much income tax (probably zero) and NI were deducted.0 -

From the description I think it is certain that the OP is referring to income tax. Yes national insurance is a tax but it is never referred to as a tax.
The OP has quoted from their P60 on which it is described as "Tax deducted or refunded". Not only called tax but also refers to the possibility of it being shown as refunded; something that never happens with NI.
The figures are marked with * to show the figures that are to be used on "your Tax Return if you get one" Ni is never used to fill in a tax return.
The figure you calculate for NI is close but if you try the same for the possible tax paid on emergency tax for 7 months it comes even closer.
This is definitely income tax.0 -
Okay, so I just look at my payslip for March......
Salary: £1603.08

Total Gross Pay: £1530.94
Total Taxable Pay: £1530.94
Total Decuctions: £207.87
NET PAY: £1323.07
I think we can confirm I was paying tax? Thanks to above for saying to check last months payslip.

These figures appear to relate to the current tax year, was this payment made on or after 6 April?0 -
Sorry, yes the one above was after the tax year. This is one for Febuary:

Does your tax code as shown on your payslip have an 'M1' after it ? Yes, from your figures you can expect a rebate, assuming your tax code was 1150L.0 -

These are the figures I would expect to see for someone on the emergency tax code.0
