When should I send cheque

Hi,
I need to pay HMRC £650 by June 12. I was going to pay on line today but they have suspended that service until May 14 for some reason. So I need to send a cheque or wait until May 14. Please can anyone advise on when I should send the cheque to be safe and should I send it as recorded delivery? Perhaps it is already to late to pay by post. I am not saying HMRC won't process the cheque but that it may take some time and I do not want to incur any late payment expenses because of their slowness.
Thanks

I would expect a cheque to be scanned on the day it arrives and the payment to be credited as at that date even if it's not actually cleared until later.

So in your circumstances I would wait until May 14th to see if online payment becomes available again, as that way you know it's been received, but if it stays offline then you will have plenty of time to send in a cheque.

I'm doubtful if recorded delivery is of much benefit as I suspect that HMRC just sign for a batch of letters rather than for each individual one. Better to get a proof of posting from the post office.

I never knew you could get a certificate of posting. Many thanks for this.
  • You can now pay your bill on line. Service is back up and running.

There may still be an HMRC number that you can call to do a that-day debit card transaction. Very useful when the payment due was increasing day-by-day.
