As mentioned above you will need a ticket from East Croydon. You can buy a zone 6 extension at the ticket office before you travel. And yes. Take the ordinary train. I don't think 60+ cards or freedom passes are valid on the Gatwick Express for even part of the journey.

Does this webpage only apply to under-60 Oysters?

Ah I've just read elsewhere that there's a premium for using Oyster cards on the Express. I think the tickets gates to/from that platform assume you used the express, so I don't think there is a bargain way apart fro using the discount in the website.

That map's interesting. I think Coulsdon South is the southernmost station within Greater London so I would expect the Oyster to be valid to there. Also seen that the map seems to go outside the boundary for some stations (like the Ewell ones).

I don't bother with Gatwick Express. I just use my Oyster (with gold card) on Southern Rail and top it up as required to travel to Gatwick. I would have thought that this was possible with the 60+ Oyster too.

Oyster 60+ cannot be used on Gatwick Express:

Take an ordinary train and buy an extension ticket at the ticket office, showing your Oyster 60+ card when you do.
  • Personally, I have found Gatwick Express not to be a good option - just use your discount with monthly / annual card purchase and get all the benefits :)
