Council Tax - Unadopted street

Hello, sorry if this is a daft question but would there be any chance my local authority would consider re branding my 2 bed mid terrace on the basis that it is not adopted? We have our bins emptied but thats about it, we have to pay a management company each month yet the council still takes £112 each month.

Being new to this, is there any particular factors that effect banding?

Thanks y'all

  • Assuming you are in England, your Council Tax band is based on your home's open market value on 1 April 1991. The fact that you live in an unadopted road is not a reason to reduce your council tax in itself.

You would have to show that the your valuation was too high. See http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/index.htm for more details.

The only thing that affects banding is the value of the house - i.e. what it would sell for on the open market. It has nothing to do with which services you may or may not receive from the Council.

BTW you get a lot more from your Council than just getting the bins emptied.

It wont affect your banding and the council are not responsible for banding - you need to speak to the valuations office
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • I also live in a private road. The council does not maintain the road surface; does not maintain the drains and does not send in its street cleaners. Considering the fact that Council Tax is raised for all these things among many others why should I - or anyone in the same position - pay the same as others receiving all the services that the Council provides through CT revenue?
  • I don't have any kids at school, I walk to work so don't wear out the roads, don't go to the council art gallery and don't have a social worker. Should I get a reduction in council tax?

Taxation simply doesn't work like that.

I don't live in a private road. However, I hardly ever use the local library, I don't use the community centres, my daughter isn't yet of school age and my parents don't require any social care. Maybe I shouldn't pay for any of those.

Hmm, maybe I can use a similar argument for my income tax and NI...
  • Doesn't this all go to show how unequal Council Tax is?

On another tack however, I have recently returned to the UK having lived in France for some years. The equivalent of CT was about a third of that in the UK and yet provision was much superior. For example, streets were cleaned every morning. Here I live in a conservation area which receives many visitors at weekends. The litter is horrendous because, for some reason, English people would rather not use the waste bins provided. This litter is left blowing around for days until the outsourced firm employed by the Council finally gets around to clearing it up. In France this service was supplied directly by the local Council, and provided efficiently. But then, the local population was proud of its environment and cared about it.

All the government needs to do is stop ALL JSA payments after 6 months.
If someone wants money make them work for it. If they cant find work let them clean the steets. If cleaning the streets is beneath them then hard luck.

Im sick of paying taxes to fund the lay-abouts who are after free handouts.
Stop the benefits, or at least give decent members of society something back for your free ride

It's hardly that simple. Many people in the UK are at a disadvantage in the job market because of the sub-standard education provided by the state in years gone by. Yes, there are some who are more than happy to languish on handouts but I can't imagine that they are anything more than a small minority.

  • I very much doubt that any of us receive ALL the services provided by the Council. CT - whatever its merits or inadequacies - is simply a way of raising revenue. It's not based on what we consume, so rebates for not using certain services are not an option.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
