Arrrgh Train Tickets

I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on this, i went to get train tickets a while ago on Trainline.com for my upcoming holiday, however as i didnt want specific times on the way back (might be delayed) they gave me the option of anytime open return.
The tickets i was going to purchase on the way out were going at around 5pm, so i chose to go with anytime return.
However now i have looked and see they are classed as offpeak open return. Which by the looks of the journey from Carlisle to manchester and back, they are only allowed during off peak hours. Which means my original of going at 5pm is not allowed as its peak time.
Im just a bit angry that i picked that 5pm train and it said it would be cheaper to select an open return.
I feel i have wasted my cash

Firstly, using Trainline has wasted some cash because they charge booking fees where the train companies' own websites don't. That's for next time!
Why do you think that 5pm would be peak time? Between Carlisle and Manchester you can leave at 5pm both ways with an off-peak ticket return ticket for £58.80.
Finally, if you did want to use an off-peak ticket at peak time, you should be able to pay the excess at the ticket office (before boarding) and effectively upgrade it to a peak-time ticket.0 -
What's the 2 digit / letter restriction code?
If it's the £58.80 ticket @lammy82 mentioned then the 2t code is hardly limited at all, details here

Hi,
I am travelling by train between Birmingham International and Horsham (via London) on Friday 3rd August. Does anyone have an idea of the cheapest way to do this (should I purchase a one-day travelcard, split tickets etc)? I will need to be at Horsham before 9am and leave Horsham around 3:45pm.
Thanks,
