Hope this isn't a sign of the problem that they had with the child tax credit online site, early on. The site kept throwing me off saying I had put in the worng address, but the database that the telephone operators could see had the correct information. In the end I had to talk the whole thing through with an IT technician who realised that the part of the database that faced the customer had been altered somehow. The whole site was then taken offline for some time.

My money is on this being the problem I'm having, but I couldn't convince the guy on the helpline yesterday that there was a problem at their end.

I had a problem too... it doesn't recognise lower case. All letters need to be put in capitals...
At the beginning of things, the first time I put in the NI number it automatically converted to capitals but the second time it asked for the NI number it didn't and then told me the number was not recognised... if that helps..

Not quite the same problem, indeed not really a problem at all, but my only complaint with Gov.UK is that after you actually receive your pension, then you can no longer see what you are actually due to receive......my forecast was £147 per week.....as at 26th April it said £152.50, that is with the free NI credits.....all correspondence since says £147 again......have rung and asked why, but no explanation thus far...…...I should have taken a screenshot of it...…..

This saga just got even stranger. After a month, I eventually recevied a response to my BR19. It was a short letter saying !!!8220;we are sorry that we have not been able to send you a state pension forecast as our records indicate your personal details need updating with HMRC!!!8221;. I am getting seriously worried now, every attempt to find out about my pension gets blocked. I have been given the same HMRC Phone contact detail that I tried before in vain, so I!!!8217;m at a total loss now.

I finally got through to somebody who has told me that I have failed my security checks with HMRC and that I have to send them a certified copy of my passport, birth certificate or driving licence. Can!!!8217;t imagine how this has happened.... it had better not be ID fraud

With respect to this, and post #12, when I had the problem with the Child Credit online portal, I had to go between normal operator and "Technical (IT) operator" several times in the same phone call, before I could convince the IT guy to pretend he was me, and go through my log-in process from his screen. At that point he suddenly realised what I was telling him, and picked up on the problem. Previously they had both been looking at their side of the database. I was able to persuade him to do it, because I had (even in those days) been using a computer for many years, so I knew the problem wasn't with me.

I think you were fortunate to find someone on the end of the call prepared to do this, this is precisely what I was trying to get them to do weeks ago, I am reasonably IT savvy. But as for this new explanation, I don’t know, think I just have to jump through the hoops (and pay a solicitor for certifying my id) and see what happens...

Aren't all copies of birth certificates 'certified copies' ?

I fail to see how paying a solicitor to certify it further achieves anything in terms of proving your id

They are if they are obtained from the Register Office, at the time of your birth registration. You can possibly get replacements from them if necessary. Most "copies" you now get however are just that - "photocopies" of the entry. Unless you send an original, you would need to get a solicitor (or I think the PO) to certify a scanned version.

Well now I’m really baffled... my pension forecast just arrived in the post today, so no idea what the nonsense yesterday was about! Annoying that I’ve just wasted money on getting my passport certified but still... Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
