Overseas pharmacies

Options
Has anyone used a reliable pharmacy overseas? Its not something i want to do but unfortunately im left with no other option, in my view anyway.
Im only trying to buy a product called Questran, i was given this on prescription it worked really well for me after suffering with the dreaded IBS for getting on for thirty years. Unfortunately when i requested some more i was met with a resounding ‘no’. Not on cost as it was working out 10p a day. Instead i now have to wait to see a specialist.
If anyone can help i would be so grateful.

there are valid reasons it may not be suitable eg gallstones

I would seriously wait to see the specialist instead of guessing what's up and possibly injuring yourself

I take Questran although not for IBS, I think it's evil but unfortunately necessary. It makes taking other medications really difficult. I imagine there are much better options for IBS.

Even when the specialist suggested I take it, my GP had to write back and get a lot of clarifications about how I should be taking it. And that's without getting into the side effects.

It's not a nice simple treatment.

I agree with BrassicWoman, listen to your GP and see the specialist.

Well, I've had IBS for best part of 30 years as well. On and off, went off in my mid 20's for a while. I thought I'd tried a number of things but never heard of that.

I've been sent to a dietitian to exclude milk in all forms and all foods. That worked at the time but I don't do that any more.

Now I take good old mebeverine (sp?) which works for me if you take it exactly as prescribed.

I would be careful with self prescribing from another county. If it isn't available here. Very careful research will have taken place to make the decision, I personally have faith that it wouldn't just be cost.

Thanks for your replies, i actually had my gallbladder removed 18 months ago so there is no problem with gallstones. It has actually been working very well, just half a sachet in the morning one hour after my other medication, then a loperamide in the afternoon. I have tried everything else possible, exclusion diets, codeine etc.
My daughter is actually a hospital consultant so am aware of any risks and have previously had a sigmoidoscopy and have done so much research for decades. There are several articles which suggest that 1 in 3 cases of IBS d is in fact bile acid malabsorption, think that is why this drug works so well.

I have a relative abroad who can maybe buy it for me just to tide me over if no one can recommend a site.

Maybe speak to your daughter then, if she's a Consultant. I'm sure she'll explain the issues with self-medicating with drugs from unknown sources!

Seriously, wait to see the specialist. Bile-salt malabsorption is certainly a cause of IBS type symptoms and the specialist may agree with you and continue prescribing. I'd not be keen if it's felt unnecessary as cholestyramine is a faff with other medications and does have some potential nutritional and metabolic side-effects.

Thank you for your imput i understand your comments. I also understand the gp!!!8217;s reluctance due to the blame culture. Though after so many years of turning down outings, meals out and holidays and work opportunities I was quite happy using medication that lists it!!!8217;s main side effects as constipation and gas!

I don't seriously think reputable site users will advise on illegally importing drugs. I think it's unfair to ask.

I take it for bile acid malabsorption.

The timing around your other medications is very different to what my consultant told me. My GP had to clarify it with him, because the GP wasn't confident prescribing it and making that call on his own (the specialist wrote to him with the dose, but not the timings). It seems entirely reasonable that your GP wants a specialist to make the decisions. I'm actually surprised that a GP would prescribe cholestyramine themselves, especially to someone who takes other medication.

It's not just diarrhoea medicine though. It affects cholesterol levels and stops other drugs being absorbed and working properly.

You don't even know if you have the illness it's prescribed for.

Why are you so against seeing a specialist and getting a proper diagnosis?

And yes, buying prescription only drugs online from abroad and having them shipped here is illegal.
