Sitting here utterly gutted, as 5 months into my job the company has decided they don't want me anymore.
I'm leaving with 6 weeks pay in lieu of notice, but I'm unemployed as of today.
I've already rung round the job agencies I was registered with 5 months ago, and about to trawl the job sites, but do I need to register at the job centre immediately in case I don't get a new job within the 6 weeks?
What does that entail?
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Register a claim so your NI contributions keep getting paid.
You start the JSA claim off online then they call you in to discuss your jobseekers agreement. If you have a more specialised job then you can ask that this includes only applying for similar jobs for the first few months as otherwise you will be expected to apply for anything going.

You will be asked why you left your previous job. Your claim may be delayed if this is considered to be for no good reason or because of misconduct.

Depending on your financial situation, level of savings etc you could also look at other benefits such as housing benefit if you are renting.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I don't think you'll get JSA for the 6 weeks that your employer has paid you.

    Good luck

Sorry to read your news chin up, least you are as free as a bird to start immediately elsewhere. It's the only comfort I have in my fixed term contract knowing that when it reaches toward the end there will be less notice saga and upset.

Employers these days don't want notice periods.

Just seen a job re advertised a week later as it is so easy to do and this time the heading is additionally laced immediate start. Where I imagine they got CV's in and realised nope we don't want to do notice periods. So go turn it to your advantage.

I had 3 months PILON but was able to claim JSA immediately. That was 8 years ago but I don't think the rules have changed.

No, I didn't expect to. But I was hoping that it would kick-in as soon as the 6 weeks is over if I haven't got another job by then - of course I will have another job by then
